«This story is very contemporary, very modern-day… A brilliant text with plenty of relevant messages. These are our today’s problems!» — this is how director Suren Shakhverdyan speaks about Ivan Goncharov’s novel «An Ordinary Story», which served as the basis for his impressive theatre production «Money. Passion. Power».
The story of a young provincial who comes to the capital, where money rules and passions destroy ideals and dreams, is not at all new — that is why Goncharov called it «ordinary». Thanks to the theatrical aesthetics of the play, which critics rightly call «luxurious minimalism», the theme of the struggle of ideals with cupidity and cynicism becomes acutely in tune with the times. Lace collars and frock coats coexist with social media posts and surveillance cameras, while the script writer Nara Stepanyan and the director do not deviate from the story line of the novel and carefully preserve Goncharov’s juicy language in the dialogues. Suren Shakhverdyan and his team answer the eternal question of how to stage a classic today — stage it rigorously and very theatrically.
